Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)
- Trip Grade: Strenuous
Overview
A Trekker’s Guide to the Nepal Himalaya
Less Oxygen
Above 3,000 meters, oxygen levels decrease. Around 5,000 meters, there is about 50% less oxygen, and even normal breathing can feel difficult.
Altitude Sickness
Symptoms such as headache, nausea, poor sleep, and loss of appetite can begin early and should never be ignored.
Go Slow
Physical fitness does not protect you from altitude. Move slowly and give your body enough time to adapt.
Drink More Water
Drink water regularly, even if you are not thirsty. Dehydration at high altitude can increase the risk of illness.
Turn Back if Needed
The mountain does not care about your goals. If you feel unwell, turning back is the right decision. The mountain will always be there – your health may not.
