Mt. Kailash (6638m), the holy sacred mountains was once only a myth to the outside world. Assumed to lie somewhere between the vast expanse of China and the subcontinent of India, it lay hidden within the forbidden land of Tibet. To the Tibetans it is Khang Rimboche (Precious Snow Mountain) and is revered not only by Buddhists but also by millions of Hindus, Jains and followers of other traditional faiths.
Today it is known primarily as the abode of Lord Shiva. The name Kailash appears in the epic “Mahabharata” as well as the “Ramayana”. It is believed the four great rivers of Asia: Karnali, Indus, Sutlej and Brahmaputra had their source at the foot of Mt. Kailash.
Mt. Kailash is also the ultimate pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists and followers of other traditional faiths who believe that by circling the foot of the mountain, they will be cleansed of all earthly sins and reach the ultimate spiritual freedom.
